XI International Congress on Management of Amazonian and Latin American Wildlife
St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago, 17 - 22 August 2014
XICIMFAUNA Circular #2
10th October, 2013

“Conservacion y Methodos de Utilizacion Alternativos y Sostenibles para los Animales Neo-tropicales”
Alternativas Sustentáveis Métodos de Conservação e Utilização de Animais Neo-tropicais”
“Alternative Sustainable Conservation & Utilization Methods for Neo-tropical Animals”

Colleagues, Amazonian and Neo-tropical Animal Wildlife Aficionados:

Since the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago (UWI) and the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) won the bid to host the 11th Conference on Management of Amazonian Wildlife (XICIMFAUNA) in 2014 in Salta, Argentina in May 2012, we have made significant progress towards organizing
XICIMFAUNA scheduled for 17th to the 22nd of August 2014.

The first thing that we would like to bring to your attention is the “Conference Logo”. It was designed by a Graphic Arts student from the UTT, John S. Donaldson Campus [Ms. Michelle Ragbir supervised by Mrs. Elizabeth French]. Our logo incorporates the “
Steel Pan”, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. On both sides of the instrument are the sticks that are used to play the sweet pan that you will all hear when you come to Trinidad and Tobago for the conference. Each note of the instrument depicts an icon of one of the Neo-tropical animals of importance to Trinidad and Tobago [Leather Back Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), Opossum/Manicou (Didelphis marsupialis), Agouti (Dasyprocta leporina), Boa constructor (Boa constrictor), Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber, one of our national birds) and the Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis)].

WHAT IS THE CIMFAUNA?
Those of you who did not see Circular #1, CIMFAUNA is a Spanish acronym for
“The International Congress on the Management of Amazonian and Latin American Wildlife”. This has been a community of persons who have over the years organized meetings to help advance and improve the management of wildlife [non-domesticated animals] in the Neo-tropics [the Tropics of the New World (Central America, South America and the Caribbean)].

The CIMFAUNA is the only conference of its kind in the world that focuses only on Neo-tropical Animals and related Subjects and Issues!
So far ten (10) of these biennial Meetings or Congresses were held in the following cities on the South American mainland:

1992 Belem, the State of Para (Brazil)   1995 Iquitos (Perú)  1997 Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia)
1999 Asunción (Paraguay)  2001 Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) 2004 Iquitos (Peru)
2006 Ilheus, State of Bahia (Brazil) 2008 Rio Branco, State of Acre (Brazil)  2010 Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia)
  2012 Salta (Argentina)

The work of the CIMFAUNA and the outcome of the previous 10 congresses over the last 20+ years can be viewed on the following website: www.comfauna.org .

In 2014 this Hemispheric congress will be held for the first time outside of the South American continent. We are therefore aiming at getting the widest participation possible not only from South America but also from Central American, Caribbean and North American Institutions and Zoos interested in Amazonian Animal Wildlife. The Congress will have three (3) official languages (English, Portuguese and Spanish), but the website that is being developed will also have translations in French and Dutch. We therefore shall like to welcome you all. The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is at the Hub of South America, the Caribbean, Central America, North America and Europe. There are direct flights to Trinidad and Tobago from Caracas (Venezuela), Paramaribo (Suriname), Georgetown (Guyana), Panama City (Panama), Miami, New York, Washington D.C. (USA), Toronto (Canada), London (United Kingdom) and most Caribbean islands.
